What OFS helps with

Safety training

Working safely in Svalbard needs specific skills, so training is mandatory for every student, staff member and anyone else going into the field with UNIS. All courses include polar bear safety with rifle shooting. Snowmobile and boat transport need extra courses.

UNIS students and staff

  • Enrolled in a course? The student administration signs you up for what you need.
  • AS-101 Arctic Survival and Safety runs for a week at the start of January, then again for PhD and master students and staff.
  • Doing fieldwork without a course? Sign up yourself. Your department’s field engineer can tell you which training you need.
  • Polar bear training more than six months ago? Join a refresher.

External participants

The Arctic Safety Centre runs safety courses for people not affiliated with UNIS. Some places on the January safety week are also open to externals.

Courses, prices and registration are on the Arctic Safety Centre pages.

Frequently asked questions

When are the booking deadlines?

Summer and autumn logistics: 1 March.

Winter and spring logistics: 1 November.

Must guest PhDs and visiting researchers complete the UNIS safety training before fieldwork?

Yes. Guest PhDs and other visiting researchers follow the same rules as UNIS staff, so they must complete the necessary training.

What do I need to borrow a weapon from UNIS?

You must be part of UNIS-organised fieldwork, as staff, student or field assistant.

You must have completed the UNIS polar bear safety course, with a refresher if more than six months have passed.

You must hold a valid firearms licence or a rifle loan permit from the police or the Governor. Weapons are never lent for private use.

Who gets priority if equipment runs short?

UNIS courses that booked before the deadline come first, then UNIS projects, then externally funded projects.
